An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Ships Agent to join a global maritime organisation!

Our client is looking for a seasoned and experienced Shipping Agent in Southern Africa with an in depth knowledge of the ins and outs of port business.As this role is to head up a team of ships agents in the various ports the suitable applicant needs to have a proven track record of Senior Leadership and People management as the. will manage the team that does the following :

Pre-arrival planning for the ship's port call.
Notifying the port of the ship's pending arrival and assisting with the ship's cargo manifest, with particular attention to the goods to be off-loaded during the port call
Notifying consignees of the date and time the ship will discharge cargo, if the shipping contract requires notice.
Arranging for pilots, who will board the ship as it approaches the entry to the channel or harbour to advise the captain on conditions and local requirements.
Arranging for tugs to assist with docking and undocking.
Advising local customs personnel of the arrival of freight, so the freight can clear customs with dispatch.
Arranging for "booked services" such as longshoremen to unload cargo and for trucks to move containerized freight from the port to the next mode of transportation to the final destination
Organising and managing vessel movements out of the port at the end of the transaction
Ensuring all matters requiring attention by ships are handled efficiently during their stay in port

The Shipping agent will also take care of every need and requirement of the crew like getting local currency, getting the mail, any ships repairs, refilling the food and water containers and many other such duties.

Proactively on-selling marine products, technical services and maritime services to customers
Ensuring the optimum use of system applications developed by the Company

Suitable applicants must have a track record and demonstrable ability to manage a port call efficiently and cost effectively on behalf of the company's principals.

Further key requirements are the abilities to work reliably to tight deadlines and to communicate effectively with the company's clients.

As ships come and go 24 hours a day, the job will entail some out of hours and weekend work and the successful candidate will also be required to travel to the various ports below where the company has offices

The Senior Manager will head up the Ships Agency in Southern Africa and will manage all the stakeholders involved to ensure they remain on schedule. This includes all the other ship agents and brokers in all the ports.
