Description

Opportunity with a leading mining company on site in Mpumalanga. This role is resreved for a South African Aa citizen (African/Indian or Coloured) with a minimum of a NADSAM and COMSOC 1&2 qualification.

Responsibilities will include:

- The role is responsible for monitoring safety compliance of the operations / service department, thus ensuring that legal compliance in terms of safety is maintained - ensuring the implementation, co-ordination and maintenance of Safety principles and OHSAS 18001
- Lead / participate in site safety inspections giving instructions to the Safety Officer regarding the inspections and conduct Visible Felt Leadership through ensuring that the inspections are done properly and to required standards as well as signing off of the log book
- Compile Safety Superintendent month-end report and oversee incident and accident investigations through identify accidents deemed to be investigated and instruct the Safety Officer to conduct these ensures that the investigations are conducted according to the group's Investigation procedure
- Report review and final sign off high potential incidents and Injuries
- Liaise with external auditors when utilised and review final report and sign off
- Review finding report and sign -off report
- Ensure compliance of plan with corporate requirements
- Develop and Implement base-line and issue-based risk assessments
- Apply hierarchy of control to all risk assessments as low as reasonably possible (ALARP)
- Evaluate requirements of departmental staff, ensure that individuals are provided with the correct development opportunities, evaluate training courses as well as oversee the development of training material
- Assist with the recruitment and selection of new employees and graduates ensuring the right people for the vacancies
- Ensure that costs allocated for engineering tasks within specified operation are controlled within the prescribed budget and compares with internationally accepted benchmarks
- Ensure cost saving
- Approve budgetary expenditures within authorisation limits
- Control capital expenditure for improvement programmes

Education:

- National Diploma / Degree in Safety Management (NQF Level 7)
- Chamber of Mines Safety Officer Certificate 1 and 2
- Knowledge of OHSAS 18001
- Diploma / Degree in Mining Engineering or a related field advantageous

Experience & Knowledge:
Extensive experience in health and safety as a Safety officer essential
Experience in engineering, mining or metallurgy
In depth understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals Regulations, Occupational Diseases Act, Workman's Compensation Act
Knowledge of gas testing, flame proofing, strata control
Good understanding of safety management theory, behavioural safety and risk management framework, procedures and systems
In depth knowledge of the Fatal Risk standards and golden rules
Computer Literacy (MS Office)
Extensive knowledge in the mining industry
Must have a valid South African Driver's licence
