Able Seafarer Engine Course
Admission level:
A valid SAMSA Accredited Certificate for Ratings forming part of an Engineering Watch is required to attend this course. A copy of the certificate must be produced on the first day of the course.
English language – good spoken, reading and writing skills required.
Objective:
To train seafarers towards their SAMSA Able Seafarer Engine Certificate, using engine room simulator training and class room theory as set out by the SAMSA code.

- Module One: Contribute to a safe engineering watch
Communications, understanding orders, watch keeping duties, changing of watch, safe watch keeping - Module Two: Contribute to the monitoring and controlling of an engine room watch
Engine room familiarization, basic operating procedures and watch keeping routines - Module Three: Contribute to fuelling and oil transfer operations
Bunker procedures, fuel and lube oil internal transfers, oil spill prevention procedures - Module Four: Contribute to bilge and ballast operations
Bilge pumping, ballast operations, tank gauging - Module Five: Contribute to operation of equipment and machinery
Valves and pumps, lifting gear, water tight doors, crane operations - Module Six: Safe use of electrical equipment
Electrical safety precautions, isolation procedures, power supplies - Module Seven: Contribute to shipboard maintenance and repair
Routine maintenance and repair procedures, safety with hand and power tools - Module Eight: Contribute to the handling of stores
Safe handling stowage and securing of stores - Module Nine: Apply precautions and contribute to the prevention of pollution of the marine environment.
MARPOL, SOPEP, oil spill and pollution prevention procedures - Module Ten: Apply occupational health and safety procedures
