Engine Room Watchkeeping

This Skills Programme is aimed at:

  • Senior Engineering Cadets
  • Junior Engineers 
  • Fourth Engineers
  • Third Engineers

Learning Objectives expected to be achieved upon completion of this course are:

  • To teach the student a thorough understanding of watch keeping procedures and duties.
  • To train the student in recognising various malfunctions and deviations during watchkeeping periods, as well as corrective actions to be taken.
  • To train the student in emergency procedures during watchkeeping periods.
  • Appreciation of safe working practices in the engineering environment of a ship.
  • To train participants in compliance to STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) requirements

  • 5 Days

  • Introduction to the usage of an Engine Room simulator
  • Watchkeeping during manned ER periods
  • Watchkeeping during unmanned periods
  • Investigation of faults and malfunctions in a rigorous and adaptive manner
  • Recognise the initial stages of major plant defects
  • Control and operate the plant to minimise disruption to the safe navigation of the vessel
  • Implementation of the correct initial response in an emergency
