Engine Room Watchkeeping
This Skills Programme is aimed at:
- Senior Engineering Cadets
- Junior Engineers
- Fourth Engineers
- Third Engineers
Learning Objectives expected to be achieved upon completion of this course are:
- To teach the student a thorough understanding of watch keeping procedures and duties.
- To train the student in recognising various malfunctions and deviations during watchkeeping periods, as well as corrective actions to be taken.
- To train the student in emergency procedures during watchkeeping periods.
- Appreciation of safe working practices in the engineering environment of a ship.
- To train participants in compliance to STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) requirements

Learning themes covered in this course:
- Introduction to the usage of an Engine Room simulator
- Watchkeeping during manned ER periods
- Watchkeeping during unmanned periods
- Investigation of faults and malfunctions in a rigorous and adaptive manner
- Recognise the initial stages of major plant defects
- Control and operate the plant to minimise disruption to the safe navigation of the vessel
- Implementation of the correct initial response in an emergency
