SAMTRA offers the Global Maritime Distress Signal (GMDS) course and the the Global Maritime Distress Signal Refresher course.

The course objectives of the GMDS course are:

•  For the student to become conversant with the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System and it’s sub-systems.
• To be a competent operator of radio equipment designed for the above, with particular emphasis in radio communications during Distress incidents.

The Course Content focusses on the following learning themes and is dased on the IMO Model Course 1.25, covering the four broad areas of the GMDSS, namely:

• Maritime Mobile Service
• Maritime Mobile – Satellite Service
• MSI
• SAR

This is combined with practical work on simulated radio equipment.
